I recently had a moment that made me pause and reflect on how I see myself. A friend of mine paid me a compliment, and my immediate reaction was to reject it – to fight against it as if it wasn’t true. The words they said? “You’re a really good mom.” Simple, but it hit me hard.
Why did that feel so difficult to accept? It’s because I, like many of us, have allowed the labels I’ve given myself to override the truth about who God says I am. And today, I want to talk about this battle over our identity – a battle that so many of us are fighting silently.

The Labels We Carry
How often do we let negative labels define us?
- “I’m stupid.”
- “I’m lazy.”
- “I’m unworthy.”
- “I’m not good enough.”
These labels don’t come from God. They come from the enemy, and yet we hold onto them like they’re facts. Here’s the truth: God didn’t create you to be the labels you’ve accepted.
He didn’t make you to be stupid, lazy, or unworthy. He made you with purpose, on purpose. You were chosen before the foundations of the earth – before He even said, “Let there be light.” That’s the truth about who you are.
The Enemy’s Strategy: Attack Your Identity
There is a war on our identity, and it’s deeper than any societal debate. The enemy’s ultimate goal is to separate us from the truth of who God says we are. Why? Because when we believe the lies, when we accept the labels, we stop living out our calling.
For me, the enemy loves to whisper, “You’re stupid.” He knows that my calling involves speaking and teaching. If he can convince me I’m not smart enough, I’ll stop showing up. I’ll silence myself, and my gifting will go unused.
What’s the lie the enemy keeps using against you? Maybe it’s:
- “You’re not good enough to start that ministry.”
- “You’ll never be a good parent.”
- “Who are you to think you can help others?”
The enemy’s lies are targeted. They’re meant to hit the core of your calling. But here’s the thing: God equips those He calls. If you feel unequipped, you’re in good company. Look at Moses, Gideon, and countless others in Scripture who felt inadequate, God used them anyway.
God Will Prove the Lies Wrong
God is so good that He’ll give you evidence to counter the lies. For me, one of the ways He’s been doing that is through school. Every time I submit an assignment, the enemy tells me I’m going to fail. And yet, every time, I excel. Even when I’m sure I’ve misunderstood the assignment, God proves me wrong.
The worst grade I’ve gotten so far was because I waited until the last minute – and even then, it was a B. God is showing me that I’m not stupid. He’s showing me that He’s equipping me for what He’s called me to do.
God is doing the same for you. The question is: Are you willing to believe Him?

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.
This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
How to Fight Back
The battle for your identity isn’t one you can win on your own. But God has given you the tools to fight:
- Take Every Thought Captive
When negative thoughts come, stop them in their tracks. Replace them with the truth of Scripture.- Lie: “I’m not good enough.”
- Truth: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
- Stay in the Word
The Bible is your weapon. If you don’t know what God says about you, how can you counter the enemy’s lies? Open your Bible, read it, and pray for understanding. - Surround Yourself with Community
God didn’t design us to fight alone. Find people who will remind you of the truth when you’re struggling. I’m so grateful for friends who call me out when I speak negatively about myself, they hold me accountable to see myself the way God sees me. - Pray Without Ceasing
Ask God to help you see yourself through His eyes. Pray for strength, for wisdom, and for the ability to let go of the lies.
You Are Not Your Thoughts
Your thoughts are not your identity. Just because a thought comes into your mind doesn’t mean it’s true. The enemy loves to plant seeds of doubt and negativity, but you don’t have to water them.
The next time the enemy tries to tell you who you are, remember who made you. Remember who died for you. You are loved, chosen, and created for a purpose. Don’t let the lies keep you stuck.
If you’ve been labeled by your past, your struggle, or your worst moments, God has something better to say.
