I was reading Fervent by Priscilla Shire the other day, diving deep into strategic prayer, and something hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m currently on the Daniel Fast, and prayer has been a central focus for me. This book has been an incredible resource for not only growing spiritually but also understanding the strategic importance of knowing who we are in Christ. Let me share with you what God revealed to me.

The topic? Identity.
I’ve always had a strong connection to the book of Ephesians. In fact, it’s one of the first books I studied deeply. If you haven’t read it recently, I encourage you to dive in, and if you’re looking for a quick yet powerful study, I have a 30-day Bible study available on my page.
But let’s talk about identity. In Fervent, Priscilla Shire outlines how the enemy attacks our sense of identity. He knows that if he can make us doubt who we are, he can take us down. The book describes how we are “light in the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8) and reminds us of the spiritual blessings we’ve been given in Christ.
God chose us.
Before the foundation of the world, God chose us. Not only that, but He equipped us with every spiritual blessing through Christ. When you start to truly let that sink in, you realize just how much power we have within us. Here’s just a quick look at what God says about our identity:
- We are chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).
- We are regarded as holy and blameless before Him (Ephesians 1:4).
- We are adopted into His family according to His will (Ephesians 1:5).
- We are redeemed and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7-8).
- We are lavished with grace (Ephesians 1:7-8).
- We are recipients of a glorious inheritance in heaven (Ephesians 1:11).
- We are secured forever by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14).
I don’t know about you, but when I read that list, my heart starts to burn with excitement. This is who we are in Christ. And yet, so often we walk around defeated, acting as if we are victims to life’s circumstances.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.
This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
We are victors, not victims.
I’ll admit, I’ve had my fair share of struggles with identity. It’s easy to get caught up in life’s difficulties and forget who we are in Christ. We are not defined by our struggles or by how the world views us. We are not victims of our circumstances. God has already equipped us with everything we need. So why do we keep acting like we’re powerless?
Let’s get real for a minute.
How many of us struggle with anxiety, depression, or negative self-talk? I know I do. But the truth is, those voices in our heads? They’re not ours. Those are lies the enemy has planted to distract us from our true identity. The enemy wants you to believe that you’re not worthy, that you’re a failure, that you’ll never measure up. But none of those things are true. The God who created the universe looks at you and sees someone chosen, holy, blameless, loved beyond measure.
When you start to see yourself through that lens, you begin to realize just how powerful you are.
You have Power through Christ
And I’m not here to tell you that everything will magically get better overnight. I’m not going to sit here and say that your struggles will disappear. But I will tell you that you have authority over your life. You have more power than you realize.
In this life, we face challenges, but we do not fight alone. God has given us the tools to fight back, especially in the battle for our minds. Through prayer, Scripture, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm against the lies of the enemy.
You see, God has already given us everything we need. We don’t need to wait for some magical moment to claim victory. The moment we accept who we are in Christ is the moment we start walking in victory.
Division tears us Down
Now, I want to address something very real here. There’s been so much division in the world, and sometimes, even within the body of Christ. We see people attacking each other instead of lifting each other up. We see Christians bullying others, tearing each other down, and forgetting the love that Jesus has shown us. But here’s the thing: the way we treat others is a reflection of our identity in Christ. If we are truly rooted in who we are—if we understand our identity in Christ—we will show that same love to others.
Our calling as believers isn’t just about us. It’s about the community we build. Jesus didn’t go at it alone—He had His disciples. We are meant to be in community with one another, encouraging each other, reminding each other of who we are. If we’re not doing that, then we’re missing the point.

If your prayer life feels distracted or dry, Fervent by Priscilla Shirer is a must-read. It’s not fluffy, it’s a straight-up battle plan for getting strategic and intentional in prayer. Practical, powerful, and rooted in Scripture. Highly recommend. Grab it here.
Know your Identity
The world doesn’t need more fighting, more hatred, or more division. It needs people who know their identity in Christ and are willing to stand up and fight for the truth. So let’s stop with the negativity, the judgment, and the bullying. Instead, let’s lift each other up. Let’s remind each other of who we are in Christ.
The enemy is relentless, but so is God’s love. And when we know who we are in Christ, there’s nothing the enemy can do to take that away.
So, I want to leave you with this: You are chosen. You are loved. you are equipped, victorious, secure. You’re holy and blameless before God. This is who you are, no matter what the world says or what lies the enemy tries to feed you.
Now, let’s go out and live like we believe it.
