In Ephesians 6, the apostle Paul includes something unexpected in his list of spiritual armor: shoes. He refers to them as the “shoes of peace,” and this imagery is more than a simple metaphor. Just as a soldier’s footwear provides solid footing and stability, these spiritual shoes equip us to stand firm in any battle we face. When we’re securely grounded in the peace of God, we can move forward with confidence instead of being paralyzed by fear or uncertainty.

What does peace have to do with readiness?
Paul writes, “and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15, ESV). At first glance, it might seem strange to link peace with readiness for battle, but this points to the kind of peace we’re talking about – a deep assurance rooted in the gospel. The “good news” is that we’ve been reconciled to God through Jesus, and that foundational truth should shape every step we take. Knowing we’re fully loved and forgiven gives us the stability we need to face life’s challenges without fear of being knocked off balance.
These Shoes of Peace aren’t passive. They’re made to help us stand our ground when trials come, but also to move forward in faith when God calls us to act. If fear and anxiety keep us stuck, God’s peace frees us to take bold steps, trusting His love and guidance rather than giving in to uncertainty. In a world that often thrives on chaos, choosing to walk in peace can feel counterintuitive, yet it’s exactly what sets us apart and anchors us in God’s presence.
Jesus modeled peace
Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. In John 16:33 (ESV), He said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Even as He faced betrayal and the cross, He was steady and secure because He trusted the Father’s plan. That same peace is available to us. We don’t have to be rattled by every unexpected twist or looming worry; we can rest in the victory Christ has already won.
How to Put On the Shoes of Peace Each Day
So how do we practically “put on” these Shoes of Peace each day? One way is to start your morning in prayer, handing over your anxieties before they take root. Invite God to calm your heart and remind you that His power and love are greater than any obstacle. Another way is to immerse yourself in Scripture, especially passages that confirm your identity in Christ. Steeping your mind in biblical truth ensures that peace remains your default posture rather than panic. Finally, look for opportunities to extend peace to those around you. Be a calming presence in your home, workplace, and friendships. Pursuing peace in relationships mirrors the heart of God, guarding against conflict and disunity.
When we stand in the peace God provides, fear and chaos lose their grip. That doesn’t mean life will suddenly be easy or free from problems, but it does mean we’ll be equipped to face them with unwavering assurance. Whether we’re waiting for answers, taking a step of obedience, or simply holding steady in a season of uncertainty, the Shoes of Peace keep us grounded in the truth that God is with us and for us.

The Shoes of Peace remind us that we don’t have to stumble through life or remain stuck in fear. Because of Jesus, we’re reconciled to God, and that unshakable reality paves the way for us to live with a calm assurance. When we trust His promises and allow His peace to guide our steps, we’ll find ourselves both standing firm and moving forward, no matter what challenges arise.
