This is something that has been playing in my head on repeat for months. I’ve shared openly about how I’ve struggled with my ego and what God has done in me. But man. I didn’t realize just how much I still struggle with being right for the sake of being right.

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
– John 5:19

Let’s think about this for a second. If Jesus can’t do anything without God, what makes us think that we can? If Jesus isn’t doing anything that God isn’t doing, what makes us think that we can add our own stipulations to things that Jesus didn’t have?

Jesus reiterates this in John 5:30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

Jesus did everything out of love.

He didn’t judge just to judge, He wasn’t rude and He wasn’t happy being right just for the sake of being right.

Growing up in church I’ve met a lot of Christians that make us as a whole look bad. The only verses they memorized they used to condemn other people. The only time they use the Bible at all is to thump on other’s heads to make themselves feel better.

And while I’m on this rant, please explain to me how we got to this “screw your feelings – suck it up” culture? Jesus didn’t approach anyone like that, not even the Pharisees. He always tailored His message to fit the person that was receiving the message.

When the Samaritan Woman at the well was in the well, He didn’t look at her and say “hey – keep your legs together and stop sleeping around.” No. Instead He spoke to her in the way that He knew she would hear. Jesus softened her heart. He cared about her as a whole, not spewing judgment for the sake of being right or winning an argument. In fact He completely ignored her attempts at a religious argument because He knew it wasn’t as important as her soul.

If we don’t approach things like Jesus did, we’re wrong.

From life to church to business to relationships, Jesus needs to be in it. And not our idea of Jesus, the REAL Jesus.

John 5:39-40 says “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”

Without Jesus, Scripture means nothing. You can’t just spew Bible verses and expect them to change people’s lives. You need to seek Jesus first and ask Him to reveal the meaning of Scripture to you.

The world sees Christians as heartless and disrespectful.

“There’s no hate like Christian love” is a statement that is unfortunately far too true. It’s our job to change that by seeking Jesus and having Him at the center of all that we do, say and are. We need to live like Jesus, love like Jesus, judge like Jesus.

And before you assume that you are, open up the Word and ask Him to reveal to you who He really is. I promise that it will absolutely change your life.

Dear God, thank you so much for your Word.

Thank You for revealing to me where I’ve been falling short.

Thank You for sending Your Son to die for us because You wanted that real relationship with us.

Help us to represent You the way that You want us to. Help us to live, love and be like Jesus.

Lord grab our hearts and don’t let go. Remove anything that isn’t of You and fill us with Your Holy Spirit.

Thank You so much Lord for all that You do.

Amen
