“But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him…”
– 1 Kings 12:8 (ESV)
Rehoboam had everything a new king could ask for – legacy, influence, and access to generational wisdom. Yet when given sound counsel from the elders who had advised his father Solomon, he threw it away. Why?
According to The Bible Knowledge Commentary, if Rehoboam had followed the elders’ advice, he would have eased the burdens of the people and likely preserved national unity. But in a misguided attempt to assert dominance and prove his control, he leaned on the reckless advice of his peers instead.¹
And the result? A divided kingdom.
This moment in Scripture isn’t just historical, it’s deeply personal. I find myself asking: Where in my own life am I rejecting wisdom because it doesn’t suit my pride? Where am I listening to what sounds empowering rather than what is right?

My son absolutely loves The Action Bible! The dynamic, comic-book illustrations and action-packed storytelling sparked his excitement for the Bible like never before. If you’re looking for a powerful way to engage your child with Scripture, this is it!
Rehoboam’s story is a sobering reminder that wisdom doesn’t always feel good, but it leads to peace. Pride, on the other hand, often leads to ruin. God had made a way for him to rule with compassion, but he chose posturing over humility.
Let’s not make the same mistake.
Reflection:
- Who are you taking advice from right now and why?
- Are you confusing pride for strength?
- What wisdom have you been ignoring that could actually set you free?
