Let’s be honest. Starting to read the Bible can feel like a lot.

You want to understand it. You want to feel close to God. But then you open to a random chapter, hit a genealogy, and suddenly you’re on Instagram wondering if this is even worth it.

It is worth it. But it also doesn’t have to be complicated.

If you’re feeling stuck, confused, or just plain intimidated, here are five simple ways to start reading the Bible that don’t require a theology degree or a perfect morning routine.

1. Start with one book, not the whole Bible

You don’t need to read Genesis to Revelation in one go. Start with one book, something that teaches you about Jesus and how to follow Him.

The Gospel of John is a powerful starting point because it shows both the heart and divinity of Christ in every chapter. If you’ve never read it before, check out this post that breaks down one of its most intimate moments: Jesus Cares About the Little Stuff

You can also start with a short letter like Philippians. It’s packed with truth and only takes 10–15 minutes to read.

2. Focus on understanding, not checking a box

If your goal is to “get through it,” you’ll miss what God wants to say. Slow down. Ask questions. Sit with what stands out.

One way to do that is by choosing a passage and writing down what it reveals about God’s character, your identity, and how to apply it. This approach helped me go from passive reading to actual engagement.

For a real-life example, see how I processed Trusting God in the Storm, not with a plan, but with honesty and reflection.

My son absolutely loves The Action Bible! The dynamic, comic-book illustrations and action-packed storytelling sparked his excitement for the Bible like never before. If you’re looking for a powerful way to engage your child with Scripture, this is it!

3. Let your questions lead you deeper

You are not a bad Christian for having questions. In fact, most of the disciples didn’t understand what Jesus was doing half the time. The key is to bring those questions back to Scripture, not walk away from it.

4. Use your struggles as a starting point

Sometimes the best place to begin isn’t a plan or a page, it’s your pain. What are you walking through right now? Look for Scriptures that speak to that.

Feeling anxious? Start with Psalms. Feeling burnt out or like your prayers aren’t working? Read through the stories of people who wrestled with God and didn’t have easy answers.

5. Create a rhythm, not a rule

Reading the Bible should be sustainable, not stressful. Find a time that works for your life. It doesn’t have to be an hour-long devotional. It can be ten minutes before your kid wakes up or while you’re waiting in the car.
