Have you ever felt like you were supposed to say something about your faith, but fear kept you silent? Or maybe you’ve wrestled with feeling too passive in what God has called you to do? If so, you’re not alone.

In Acts 4:23-31, we see Peter and John face real opposition for boldly preaching about Jesus. Instead of backing down or asking God to make their lives easier, they prayed for more boldness. They didn’t pray for protection or ask for things to get easier. They asked God to give them the courage to keep speaking.

That kind of faith is rare, even among believers today. But it’s exactly the kind of faith we’re called to walk in.

The Boldness of Peter and John

Before we dive into the passage, let’s set the scene. Peter and John had just been arrested for preaching about Jesus. The Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, was greatly annoyed by their message (Acts 4:2). That annoyance led to jealousy, which led to Peter and John being thrown in jail.

But the next day, when questioned about their actions, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, stood up and boldly proclaimed that salvation is found in Jesus alone (Acts 4:12).

That statement wasn’t just controversial – it was dangerous. Yet Peter didn’t hold back.

This is the same Peter who once denied Jesus three times out of fear. But now? Now he was standing in front of the same religious leaders who sentenced Jesus to death, and he was boldly declaring the truth. What changed?

The Holy Spirit.

When Peter and John were finally released, they immediately ran to their community, not to complain, not to dwell on how hard things were, but to pray.

Praying for Boldness Instead of Safety

Here’s where things really hit me: Peter and John didn’t ask God to keep them safe. They didn’t pray for the persecution to stop.

They prayed for more boldness.

“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness.” (Acts 4:29)

They asked for more opportunities to stand firm, to speak up, to be used by God, even when it was hard.

How often do we pray like that? If we’re honest, most of our prayers focus on comfort, not courage. We ask God to take away our problems, to open easy doors, to make things smoother. But the early church prayed to be even more bold, even more committed, even more willing to go through whatever was necessary to spread the gospel.

My son absolutely loves The Action Bible! The dynamic, comic-book illustrations and action-packed storytelling sparked his excitement for the Bible like never before. If you’re looking for a powerful way to engage your child with Scripture, this is it!

God Responds to Bold Prayers

Here’s the part that gives me chills every time I read it:

“And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.” (Acts 4:31)

They prayed for boldness, and God answered. Immediately.

He shook the room. He filled them with His Spirit. And they kept going.

If you feel like you’ve been too afraid to speak up about your faith, or if you’ve held back in areas where you know God has called you to be bold, this is your reminder: pray for boldness. Ask God to fill you with the same Holy Spirit that empowered Peter and John.

And don’t be surprised when He answers.

Where Do You Need More Boldness?

Maybe your boldness looks like finally speaking up in a conversation where God is nudging you to share the truth. It may look like stepping into a new opportunity, even when you feel unqualified. Maybe it means being obedient in something that scares you, trusting that God is greater than your fear.

One thing I’ve realized in my own life is that when I pray for boldness, God gives me opportunities to be bold. It’s not always easy. It’s not always comfortable. But it is always worth it.

So today, I challenge you: ask God for boldness. Pray the same prayer Peter and John prayed in Acts 4:29. And then, when the opportunity comes, step into it.

God is ready to move through you. Are you ready to let Him?
