Some days you wake up and you already know your brain isn’t going to cooperate. The simplest tasks feel complicated. Your body feels heavy. Decisions feel impossible. The idea of sitting down to study the Bible feels overwhelming even though you want it. You care. You desire consistency. But your executive function is just not functioning.

I’ve had a lot of those days. ADHD, autism, and OCD mean I have entire seasons where my mind is foggy, my energy is unpredictable, and the smallest task takes way more effort than it should. For a long time this made me feel like a bad Christian. I thought consistency meant I had to show up the same way every day, no matter how my brain was doing.

Now I know that’s not how God sees consistency.

Consistency isn’t perfection, it’s faithfulness in your real capacity.

Low executive function days don’t have to disconnect you from Scripture. You just need a way of studying that meets you where you truly are instead of where you wish you were. These are the exact methods I use when my capacity is at rock bottom.

Keep Expectations Small Enough to Actually Do

On low capacity days, the first thing to go is decision making. When you’re already overwhelmed, choosing a passage, a method, a notebook, and a location is too much.

So remove as many choices as possible.

Here’s the rule I live by on days like this:
Small counts. Simple counts. Showing up counts.

1. One Verse, No Extras

This has saved me more times than I can count. Choose one verse. Just one. Read it. Sit with it for a moment. Breathe.

You don’t need commentary or a journal. You don’t need to unpack anything. The goal is connection, not accomplishment.

God can work with one verse. He always has.

2. Listen Instead of Read

If your brain can’t process visual text, listening is not a downgrade. It’s still Scripture. It’s still intake. It still shapes your heart.

I’ll turn on an audio Bible while I’m folding laundry, driving, or sitting on the edge of my bed trying to wake up. Some days this is the only way I can connect.

And it still matters.

If your prayer life feels distracted or dry, Fervent by Priscilla Shirer is a must-read. It’s not fluffy, it’s a straight-up battle plan for getting strategic and intentional in prayer. Practical, powerful, and rooted in Scripture. Highly recommend. Grab it here.

3. Read a Psalm Out Loud

Psalms are honest. They’re short. They’re emotional, even when you’re not. And reading out loud engages your body and your voice, not just your mind.

If you can’t focus long enough to read silently, reading out loud often clears the mental fog.

It’s simple and grounding.

4. Use a Pre-Selected Passage

Decision paralysis is real. Having to pick a passage is sometimes the biggest barrier. On low function days, I go to the same handful of safe, familiar places:

  • Psalm 23
  • Philippians 4
  • John 1
  • Ephesians 1
  • Any Gospel story

Familiarity lowers stress so you can actually show up.

5. Use a Two-Minute Prayer

Not a long prayer. Not a structured prayer. A tiny one.

Something like:

“God, help me see one thing today. That’s all I need.”

This resets your focus without requiring emotional energy you don’t have.

6. Sit With One Question

Low executive function means your brain needs direction, not options. So choose one question and let it carry the whole study.

A few of my go tos:

  • What does this show me about God
  • What truth can I hold onto today
  • What stands out and why

That’s enough. You don’t need five follow up questions to connect with Scripture.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.

7. Read the Same Passage All Week

Your brain doesn’t need something new every day. Executive dysfunction often means you don’t have the mental resources for newness anyway.

Repetition creates stability. It gives your mind space to process slowly. You’ll notice different things each time.

Slow isn’t failure. Slow is depth.

8. Pair Scripture With Movement

If you can’t sit still mentally or physically, pair Scripture with something your body can do without thinking.

Walking. Stretching. Cleaning one small thing. Rocking in a chair.

Movement lowers the internal pressure so your mind can stay present.

9. Keep Tools Already Set Up

Low EF days usually mean you can’t set things up. So take away the setup.

Keep your Bible:

  • on your nightstand
  • next to the couch
  • open on your desk
  • in a spot that doesn’t require effort to access

Seeing it makes it easier to reach for it.

You’re not lazy. You’re strategically removing barriers.

10. Let Today’s Version of You Be Enough

This is the part I’ve had to preach to myself the most.

God isn’t disappointed with you for having a low capacity day. He isn’t frustrated by your mental fog. He isn’t waiting for you to “pull yourself together” before He meets with you.

God just wants you. The you who can read one verse, the you who can listen for five minutes. The you who is trying even when your brain feels stuck.

Your small effort still counts as faithfulness.

You’re Not Failing. You’re Human.

Low executive function days don’t have to disconnect you from Scripture. You just need gentler methods. Smaller steps. Less pressure. More compassion for the way your brain works.

God sees you in the days when everything feels heavy. He honors the smallest yes. He strengthens the little you can offer.

You don’t need to perform for Him. You just need to show up in whatever way you can today.
