When I first started thinking about diving into the Fruits of the Spirit, it wasn’t just about ticking off another topic on the list. It felt like God was pulling me back to the basics, reminding me of what truly matters in our walk with Him. I don’t know about you, but sometimes life feels so chaotic that I forget that it’s not just about doing all the right things or checking off the Christian “to-do” list. It’s about becoming more like Jesus, and the Fruits of the Spirit are such a beautiful, tangible reflection of that transformation.

So today, we’re kicking off a new series where we’ll dive into each fruit. One by one, we’ll explore what they mean, how they show up in our daily lives, and what it looks like to cultivate them. My hope is that you won’t just listen and move on but that you’ll take time to reflect and pray through each one. These fruits are more than nice traits to have, they’re the very qualities God is growing in us as we walk with Him. They change how we interact with others, how we handle the hard stuff, and how we represent Jesus in this world.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever thought of the Fruits of the Spirit as more than just “good traits”? How do you feel about them being characteristics Jesus is growing in you?
  2. Which of the Fruits of the Spirit stands out to you right now, and why?

What Are the Fruits of the Spirit?

Let’s start with the basics. Galatians 5:22-23 says:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.”

These aren’t just personality traits or things you work hard to develop on your own. They are characteristics that the Holy Spirit works within us as we surrender more and more of our lives to Him. They represent the very nature of Jesus and are a reflection of His love and grace at work in us.

I think it’s easy to gloss over this passage and think, “Yeah, I’ve heard that before.” But really take a second and think about it. These are the things that God is actively trying to grow in you. The more you walk with Him, the more these fruits should become evident in your life. How beautiful is that?

Reflection Questions:

  1. How have you seen the Holy Spirit produce any of these fruits in your life recently?
  2. What would it look like for one of these fruits to show up in a challenging situation you’re currently facing?

Why These Fruits Matter

When you think about it, these fruits aren’t just about having a good character or being a “nice person.” They’re about reflecting the heart of Jesus in everything we do.

And the list goes on. Each of these fruits has the potential to radically change how we approach our daily lives. For example, growing in patience has been huge for me, especially when things don’t go according to my plan (and let’s be real, that’s most of the time). I’ve learned that when I allow the Holy Spirit to work patience into my heart, it changes how I handle frustration. Instead of reacting out of irritation, I can respond with grace. That’s the kind of transformation we’re talking about here.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which fruit do you find the hardest to grow in, and why?
  2. Think of a time when you responded in a way that reflected Jesus’ character. What fruit do you think was at work in that moment?

A Quick Overview of the Fruits

Before we dive deep into each fruit in the upcoming posts, here’s a quick snapshot of what we’ll be covering:

We’ll be going deep into each one, exploring what it means in the context of our faith and how we can cultivate it in our everyday lives.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which of these fruits do you feel most resonates with your current season of life?
  2. Are there any fruits you feel God is nudging you to grow in more intentionally? What steps can you take to cultivate them?

Take a Moment for Reflection

Before we wrap up today, I want to encourage you to take a moment to reflect. Which of these fruits is God calling you to grow in right now? Is it patience as you wait for an answer to prayer? Is it self-control in a certain area of your life? Take time to pray and ask God to help you grow in that specific fruit. If you’re a journaler like me, grab your journal and jot down some thoughts. This journey is a process, and none of us have it all figured out but God is faithful to complete the work He’s started in us.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What specific fruit do you feel most led to pray about and grow in?
  2. What practical steps can you take to intentionally cultivate that fruit this week?

What’s Next?

Next time, we’ll be diving into the first fruit, love, and exploring what it means to love like Jesus. I’m excited to go on this journey with you, and I hope you’ll stick around for the whole series. I truly believe God has something powerful in store for each of us as we press into Him and allow His Spirit to grow these fruits in our lives.

The Fruit of the Spirit isn’t something we perform, it’s something the Spirit produces as we stay rooted in Him.
