I have gotten quite a few questions on Instagram and TikTok about prayer journals, so I want to take some time to talk about what they are and why they have become such an important part of my walk with the Lord.
At its core, a prayer journal is simply a way to document your prayers. That is it. It is not complicated, and it is not meant to be performative. For me, it has been one of the most healing tools in my relationship with God.
My Struggle With Prayer
Prayer has not always come easily to me. In fact, I have struggled with it for most of my life, and a lot of that traces back to my childhood.
I have shared this in another podcast episode, but I experienced trauma at a young age involving a babysitter’s son. That trauma did real damage. It affected my brain, my sense of safety, and the way I communicated. Before that, I was deeply connected to God. I loved worship. I loved being in His presence. But afterward, something changed.
I lost my voice in more ways than one. Prayer felt uncomfortable. Vulnerable. Unsafe. I did not know how to talk to God anymore, even though I wanted to. My relationship with Him became rocky, not because He moved away from me, but because I did not know how to approach Him.
How Writing Changed My Prayer Life
About a year ago, I started writing my prayers instead of speaking them out loud. I did not plan it as some big spiritual shift. I just knew that speaking felt hard, and writing felt possible.
That simple change transformed my prayer life.
When I write my prayers, it feels like a conversation. I am able to slow down, process my thoughts, and be honest with God in a way I could not do verbally. Over time, I noticed something beautiful happening. As I wrote, I started to sense the Lord responding. Sometimes through Scripture that came to mind. Sometimes it was conviction, other times it was through peace.
Even more powerful was being able to look back.
I could flip through old journal entries and see answered prayers. I could see where God had been faithful, where He had provided, and where He had carried me through things I once thought would break me. It became tangible evidence of His goodness and His love.
How to Start Your Own Prayer Journal
If you are thinking about starting a prayer journal, I want to free you from pressure right away. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Prayer journaling is not about structure or aesthetics. It is about relationship.
You can write in letter form, bullet points, short sentences, or messy thoughts. You can write one page or one paragraph. This is between you and God.
Personally, I prefer pen and paper. Writing by hand helps me process differently. It slows me down and keeps me present. But if typing works better for you, that is okay too.
If you need a place to start, try this. For the next seven days, write a short prayer entry each day. Set a five minute timer if that helps. Do not overthink it. Just write. Bring what is real. Watch what God does when you consistently come to Him.
Scripture reminds us in Philippians 4:6 that we are invited to bring everything to God in prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving. Prayer journaling has helped me actually live that out.
A Free Guided Prayer Journal to Help You Begin
To make this easier, I created a free guided prayer journal. It includes prompts and Scripture that speak to what the Bible says about prayer. It is designed to take the pressure off and help you begin building a rhythm of honest conversation with God.
