Love is the first and most foundational of the fruits of the Spirit, and for good reason. It underpins everything else in our walk with Christ. Without love, all of our other actions and attitudes fall short. Today, we’re going to explore what love looks like according to Scripture, how God demonstrates love to us, and practical ways we can show love in our everyday lives.

What is Love? A Biblical Definition

The Bible gives us a clear and beautiful definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. You’ve probably heard these verses many times, but they’re worth revisiting:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

This passage paints a picture of what love in action looks like, it’s patient, kind, humble, and forgiving. It seeks the best for others and isn’t about what we can get in return.

In 1 John 4:7-12, we see that God is love. He is the very source of it, and without Him, we can’t truly understand or express love. Verses 9-10 emphasize that God demonstrated His love by sending Jesus as a sacrifice for us. This is the essence of biblical love, it’s sacrificial, selfless, and unconditional.

How God Demonstrates Love

God’s love for us is most powerfully shown in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

This kind of love is beyond human comprehension, God gave everything for us, even when we didn’t deserve it. His love is the foundation for everything we do as believers. When we truly grasp the depth of God’s love for us, it changes the way we see ourselves and the way we interact with others.

For me, I’ve experienced God’s love in so many ways, through His provision, His guidance, and especially through His grace in my life. There have been moments when I felt unworthy, but God’s love reminded me that His grace is sufficient, that He loves me no matter what.

This love is what compels us to love others. In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus commands us to love God with all our heart and to love others as ourselves. When we love God first, our love for others becomes a natural overflow of that relationship.

Love in Action: How We Can Love Others

So, what does love look like in our daily lives? It’s easy to talk about love in theory, but putting it into action can be much harder. Here are a few practical examples of how we can show love to others:

  • Loving our families through patience and forgiveness: It’s often the people closest to us who are the hardest to love. But when we practice patience and extend forgiveness, we are demonstrating God’s love.
  • Loving strangers by showing kindness, even when it’s inconvenient: Whether it’s letting someone go ahead of us in line or offering a word of encouragement, small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
  • Loving difficult people by choosing grace instead of resentment: We all have people in our lives who are hard to love. But when we choose to respond with grace, we reflect the love of Christ.

John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Now, this doesn’t always mean physical sacrifice, but it can mean sacrificing our time, energy, or attention for the sake of others. It’s about putting someone else’s needs above our own.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.

Loving When It’s Hard

Let’s be honest – loving others isn’t always easy. There are times when people hurt us, and loving them feels impossible. But Jesus calls us to a higher standard. In Luke 6:27-28, He says, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

How do we do this? Through the power of the Holy Spirit. We can’t love like this on our own. It’s only when we rely on God’s strength and let His Spirit work in us that we can love even when we don’t feel like it.

Personal Reflection

As you think about love today, here are a few questions to reflect on:

  • Where in your life is God calling you to love someone sacrificially?
  • How can you show love in small, everyday ways?
  • Is there anyone you need to forgive or extend grace to?

Remember, love is a fruit of the Spirit. It’s something that grows in us as we walk with God. It’s not about striving in our own strength but allowing God’s love to work through us. Spend time in prayer asking God to fill you with His love and to help you love others better.

A Challenge for You

This week, I challenge you to think of one way you can show love to someone in your life. Whether it’s through a kind word, a helping hand, or simply offering forgiveness, take that step to reflect God’s love to those around you.

Love is more than a feeling, it’s the first fruit the Spirit grows in us.

I host a live Bible study every Saturday where we dig into Scripture, grow in the fruit of the Spirit, and walk it out together.
