There are days when I open my Bible and my brain immediately decides it has twelve other things to think about. I’ll start reading, make it a few words in, and suddenly remember something I forgot two days ago. Then I’ll reread the same sentence over and over. I’ll get distracted by a sound, a thought, my son, a notification, or honestly nothing at all.

It’s not that I don’t care about Scripture. I care deeply. You probably do, too. But when your brain won’t sit still, focusing on the Bible feels impossible. It’s like trying to hold fog in your hands. The harder you try, the faster it slips away.

It isn’t your fault

If you’ve ever felt guilty for that, I get it. I’ve been there. ADHD, autism, and OCD all affect my focus in different ways, and my life hasn’t exactly been quiet or predictable, either. I was a single mom for ten years, and my son is autistic, too, so our home has always been full of movement, noise, and sensory needs that don’t wait for the perfect quiet time window. I homeschool him, which adds another layer of mental load, constant multitasking, and flexibility that changes from day to day.

Some days I feel present and steady. Other days my brain is running laps around me before I can finish a single verse. That doesn’t mean I’m not trying. It means my mind works differently.

Here’s the good news: you can still connect with Scripture even when your focus is all over the place. You just need approaches that work with your brain instead of against it.

These are the strategies that actually help me focus when my mind refuses to slow down.

Start With Something That Helps Your Body Settle

Focus and your nervous system are tied together. When your body is buzzing, your thoughts will be, too. Grounding yourself first can make a huge difference.

Here are a few things that help:

  • taking a few slow breaths
  • shifting to a comfortable spot
  • lowering the lights or adding softer lighting
  • holding something with weight or texture
  • doing a quick stretch

You’re not being dramatic. You’re calming the system God created.

Use Audio Scripture to Anchor Your Mind

Sometimes reading is too much. Listening gives your brain a steady pace to follow, especially when your thoughts keep jumping.

You can:

  • listen while following the text
  • listen while walking
  • listen during chores
  • listen in short bursts throughout the day

This is still Scripture. God isn’t keeping score.

Read Out Loud When Your Thoughts Won’t Stay Put

Reading out loud forces your attention to participate. Your voice sets the speed, your ears hear the words. Your body stays involved, which helps your mind stay present.

This is one of the most effective ways to interrupt spiraling thoughts.

If your prayer life feels distracted or dry, Fervent by Priscilla Shirer is a must-read. It’s not fluffy—it’s a straight-up battle plan for getting strategic and intentional in prayer. Practical, powerful, and rooted in Scripture. Highly recommend. Grab it here.

Keep the Passage Small Enough to Manage

Short passages are your friend when your brain is restless. Long reading sessions can feel impossible, but short ones are doable.

Try:

  • one verse
  • one paragraph
  • one short story
  • a section of a Psalm

Short doesn’t mean shallow. God speaks through small things, too.

Let Your Curiosity Pull You Back In

Sometimes the best way to focus is to lean into what naturally holds your interest. If a word stands out, look it up. Did a question pop into your mind? Let yourself explore it. If something feels interesting, follow it.

Curiosity is one of the most powerful tools neurodivergent Christians have. It’s not distraction. It’s engagement.

Keep Your Hands Busy While You Read or Listen

Movement supports focus. If your hands have something to do, your mind often follows.

A few ideas:

  • fidget toys
  • doodling
  • holding a stress ball
  • pacing slowly
  • rocking in a chair
  • knitting or crocheting

You don’t have to sit still to be respectful. God isn’t bothered by movement.

Use One Simple Question to Keep Your Mind Centered

Your brain doesn’t need a long list of questions. It needs one clear focus.

Try asking:

  • What does this show me about God
  • What stands out
  • What truth can I carry today
  • What’s the main idea

One question is enough.

Switch Between Reading and Listening as Needed

You don’t have to commit to one method. Some days reading works for a minute, and then your mind wanders. Switch to audio. When audio starts drifting, switch back.

Alternating approaches helps your brain stay engaged.

Adjust Your Environment Until It Supports You

Silence, bright lights, or hard chairs might make focusing harder, not easier. You’re allowed to change your setup.

Try:

  • sitting under a blanket
  • using background noise
  • moving to the floor or couch
  • stepping outside
  • dimming the lights

These aren’t “extras.” They reduce friction.

Give Yourself Permission to Be the Way You Are

This is the part I wish I learned sooner. You don’t need a calm mind to meet with God and you don’t have to force yourself into stillness. You don’t need to match how other people focus.

God already knows how your brain works. He isn’t frustrated by your wandering thoughts. He isn’t disappointed when you get distracted. And He definitely isn’t surprised by the way your mind jumps, loops, and scatters.

God meets you in the restless moments. He meets you in the chaotic ones. He meets you when you’re trying, and it still feels messy.

You can focus on Scripture even when your brain won’t sit still. It won’t look perfect. It won’t look tidy. But it’ll be real. And God honors real.
