Life moves fast, doesn’t it? The demands, distractions, and endless to-do lists can make it hard to slow down. But Psalm 46:10 tells us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” That’s not just a nice reminder, it’s a call to pause, trust, and let God be in control.

Stillness isn’t about doing nothing, it’s about making space for God in the middle of your day-to-day life. It’s how we quiet the noise and remind ourselves that God is working, even when we can’t see it. If you’ve been craving more of God’s peace, here are seven ways to embrace stillness and draw closer to Him.

1. Start Your Day in Quiet Reflection

Before your feet hit the floor, take a moment to be still. Sit in the quiet of the morning, thank God for waking you up, and ask Him to guide your day. This doesn’t have to be long or fancy, just an intentional moment to start your day with Him. Think of it like tuning your heart to God before the noise of life tries to take over.

2. Meditate on His Word

Pick a verse and carry it with you throughout the day. Let it roll around in your mind like a treasure to unpack. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105) reminds us that God’s Word is both guidance and comfort. Keep it simple: jot the verse down, memorize it, or set it as your phone background. It’s amazing how just one verse can anchor your heart when life feels overwhelming.

3. Pause and Pray Throughout the Day

Prayer doesn’t have to be a formal event. Whisper short prayers as you go about your day. When anxiety sneaks in, pray. When you feel overwhelmed, pray. Even saying, “Lord, I trust You” in a stressful moment can shift your mindset. Prayer isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. These small pauses throughout the day keep us centered in God’s presence.

4. Practice Deep Breathing and Gratitude

When life feels like too much, stop for a moment, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Then, thank God for something, anything. Gratitude shifts our perspective from what’s going wrong to what’s good. It reminds us that God’s faithfulness hasn’t changed, even when life feels heavy. This practice isn’t just good for the soul, it helps calm the mind and body too.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.

5. Spend Time in Nature

Creation is one of God’s love letters to us. When was the last time you really noticed the sky, the trees, or the sound of the wind? Whether you go for a walk or sit quietly outside, nature has a way of pulling us back to the truth that God is bigger than our worries. Let the beauty around you remind you that if God cares for the birds, He definitely cares for you (Matthew 6:26).

6. Turn Off the Noise

Stillness won’t happen by accident, sometimes you have to create it. Turn off the distractions, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. That might mean putting your phone on airplane mode or turning off the TV. It’s in those quiet moments that God often speaks the loudest. You don’t need background noise to fill every moment, God’s peace is more than enough.

7. Journal Your Thoughts and Prayers

Writing things down is powerful. It slows you down and helps you process what’s on your heart. When life feels chaotic, journaling can act like a reset button. Write out your prayers, reflect on what God is teaching you, or simply pour out your thoughts. If you’re looking for a way to stay focused, my free Prayer Journal can help.

Being still isn’t about stopping everything. It’s about making intentional space to rest in God’s presence. When we pause, reflect, and listen, we remind ourselves of who God is: faithful, good, and in control.
