One of the most convicting things I’ve seen while studying the prophets is how easily we reduce them to “people who told the future.” That modern mindset waters down what they actually were: mouthpieces of God delivering a call to repent, often at great personal cost.
As Jerry put it so well, “To reduce God the Father’s mouthpieces to such a view is undermining God’s authority.” That one sentence says a lot not just about our view of the prophets, but about our view of God.

They Were Chosen for a Purpose
The prophets weren’t just passionate preachers with a message they were specifically and intentionally chosen by God to represent His voice to His people. Jeremiah wasn’t volunteering to be misunderstood. He was called before he was born (Jeremiah 1:5). And that calling came with a cost.
“There is a direct correlation between calling and cost.”
If you’re truly living out the calling of God on your life, it’s going to cost you something, maybe even everything.
This truth is deeply uncomfortable in a world where Christian influence is often reduced to platforms, aesthetics, and personal branding. But the lives of the prophets remind us that obedience is not glamorous. It’s often painful. And it’s always holy.
The Rise of Counterfeit Prophets
It’s hard to ignore the irony: the same culture that downplays biblical prophets now idolizes self-proclaimed “prophetic voices” on social media. Many of these people have no theological training, no accountability, and no fruit in their lives that reflect the Spirit of God. And yet, they gather followings and shape beliefs.
That should scare us.
The prophets of Scripture didn’t seek fame. They weren’t popular. They weren’t trendy. In fact, most of them were rejected by the very people they were sent to help. Why? Because their message wasn’t what people wanted to hear.
And yet it was what God wanted to say.

My son absolutely loves The Action Bible! The dynamic, comic-book illustrations and action-packed storytelling sparked his excitement for the Bible like never before. If you’re looking for a powerful way to engage your child with Scripture, this is it!
Prophetic Obedience Still Matters
When we minimize the prophets, we’re minimizing God’s plan and the weight of His words. And when we treat our callings like optional hobbies instead of costly assignments, we risk doing the same.
True obedience will cost you:
- Your pride
- Your ego
- Sometimes your relationships
- Sometimes your comfort
- Always your control
But it’s worth it. Because He’s worth it.
If You’re Called, Be Faithful
Don’t let the noise distract you. You don’t need to be famous or need a perfect platform. You just need to be obedient to what God has called you to do.
The prophets weren’t perfect. But they were faithful.
Let’s follow their example not the trends.
