Press On Toward the Goal: Lessons from Philippians 3:12–21

Have You Ever Felt Stuck?

Have you ever looked around your life and thought, “I should be further along by now”? Maybe you feel spiritually stuck or like you’re slipping backward. If so, you’re not alone. Paul knew exactly what that felt like. Even after walking with Jesus for 30 years, planting churches, going to prison for the gospel, and writing part of the Bible, he still said, “I haven’t arrived.”

Philippians 3:12–21 is a wake-up call. It’s a call to chase Jesus like your life depends on it. Because it absolutely does.

Quick Recap: The Last Passage (Philippians 3:1–11)

Paul had just laid it all out. Nothing compares to knowing Christ. All his religious credentials and past achievements? He called them trash compared to the worth of Jesus.

He shifts from re-evaluation to pursuit. This next section shows us what it looks like to run hard after Christ.

Section 1: Keep Chasing (Philippians 3:12–14)

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” (v. 12)

Paul’s clear. He hasn’t arrived. But he’s not coasting either. He’s chasing Jesus.

Like a focused runner in the Greek games, Paul isn’t distracted by his past, whether it was shameful or impressive. His eyes are on Christ. That’s the goal.

The prize? It could be our final glorification when Jesus returns (Philippians 3:20) or eternal rewards (2 Corinthians 5:10). Either way, the end goal is Jesus.

Questions to Consider:

• Are you pursuing Christ like this is a race?
• What do you need to let go of so you can run without baggage?

Section 2: Real Maturity Keeps Moving (Philippians 3:15–16)

“Let those of us who are mature think this way.” (v. 15)

Maturity doesn’t mean you’ve made it. It means you know you haven’t.

Paul says maturity looks like movement. It’s humble, it’s hungry, it’s obedient. It presses forward in the truth we already know.

This is the opposite of what the false teachers were preaching earlier. They claimed perfection through effort. Paul says maturity isn’t about a pedestal. It’s about pressing in.

Ask Yourself:

• Am I living like I’ve arrived or like I’m still growing?

Section 3: Imitate Those Chasing Jesus (Philippians 3:17)

“Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.”

Paul isn’t flexing here. He’s giving the Philippians a pattern to follow. He’s saying, “I’m not perfect, but I’m pursuing Jesus. You can follow that.”

They needed a godly example. So do we.

I think about this in my own life. When I wanted to learn how to better steward my home, I started listening to a podcast by someone who gets it. Her strategies clicked for me. I kept her voice in my ears every day, and it made the hard stuff easier to do.

That’s what Paul was doing for the Philippians. He was giving them a voice to follow, a steady example to model after.

Ask Yourself:

• Who are you imitating right now?
• Are they leading you closer to Jesus or just entertaining you?

Section 4: A Grieving Warning (Philippians 3:18–19)

“Many walk as enemies of the cross of Christ… their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.”

This one hits hard. Paul isn’t raging, he’s heartbroken.

These false teachers were likely early Gnostics or Judaizers. They looked spiritual but lived for themselves. Pride kept them stuck instead of humbling them. They were obsessed with earthly things.

This ties right back to verses 2–3. It’s not just about what they say. It’s about what they crave.

Ask Yourself:

• What really drives me?
• Are my desires shaped by the gospel or by my cravings?

Section 5: You Belong to Heaven (Philippians 3:20–21)

“But our citizenship is in heaven…”

This is such a powerful shift. Just like Philippi was a Roman colony, we are a heavenly one.

We’re not home yet. We are citizens of heaven. And we are eagerly waiting for Jesus to return and finish what He started, transforming our broken, mortal bodies into glorified ones like His.

The Greek word Paul uses here for “conform” (symmorphizō) is the same one he used in verse 10. The sanctification journey ends with full transformation.

Ask Yourself:

• Am I living like a citizen of heaven or like a settler here?
• Is my focus on eternity or just what’s right in front of me?

Don’t Stop

This passage is real. It’s raw. It’s convicting.

Paul reminds us that spiritual maturity isn’t about standing still. It’s about pressing on.

We haven’t arrived. But we’re not going to sit here stuck.

The goal is Jesus. The reward is Jesus. And by His power, we will be made like Him.
