I didn’t ask for that season.
The one that stripped me down, shook everything I thought I knew, and left me wondering if I was even still standing. The kind of season that makes you question everything, including God.
But here’s what I’ve learned since then: suffering doesn’t just expose your pain. It reveals your theology. It forces you to decide what you really believe about Jesus.
And what I discovered in the middle of my hardest season changed everything.

1. He is always right there
I didn’t feel Him. I didn’t see Him fixing anything. And honestly, I wondered if He was even paying attention.
But the Word says otherwise.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
— Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)
Even when I felt abandoned, He had not moved. His presence wasn’t dependent on how I felt. He was right there the whole time.
If you’ve been in that place where God feels distant, this post might meet you there: Jesus Is the Light That Darkness Cannot Touch
2. He can handle my anger, frustration, and tears
I was angry. Not rebellious, just heartbroken. I didn’t understand why God wasn’t fixing what I begged Him to fix. And I felt guilty for even feeling that way.
But Scripture shows us that God invites our honesty.
“Pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”
— Psalm 62:8 (ESV)
God isn’t fragile. He doesn’t back away from raw prayers or broken emotions. He met me in my weeping and never once told me to toughen up or get it together.
I processed a lot of that in I’m Not Okay, But Here’s How I’m Talking to God Anyway
3. He is far more patient than I imagined
I kept circling the same fears. Asking the same questions. Struggling with the same things I had already surrendered a dozen times.
I assumed God was tired of me. But His Word tells a different story.
“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
— Psalm 103:8 (ESV)
God’s patience isn’t passive. It’s persistent. He stayed with me through every spiral, every relapse, every moment I doubted Him again. His faithfulness wasn’t fragile.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.
This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
4. I don’t have to understand, I just need to trust Him to carry me through
There are still parts of that season I don’t understand. And maybe I never will. But I’ve learned that peace doesn’t come from having answers. It comes from trusting the One who does.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)
I didn’t need to know what He was doing. I just needed to remember who He is.
This is what I had to walk through in 5 Steps to Letting Go and Trusting God Completely
5. Giving Him my trust is always worth it
Trust doesn’t mean the pain goes away. It means I know who holds me through it. I learned that God doesn’t always calm the storm, but He never lets the waves take me out.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.”
— Isaiah 43:2a (ESV)
Even when it costs something, trust is never wasted. I saw God show up in places I didn’t expect. And I learned that faith isn’t a feeling, it’s a choice to hold on when nothing makes sense.
Keep Truth in Front of You
If you’re walking through a hard season, it can be hard to remember what’s true. That’s why I created the Biblical Affirmation Cards, to help you hold onto Scripture when your feelings are loud and your faith feels weak.
Each card is rooted in the Word of God. Not cute sayings. Not empty platitudes. Just truth you can carry with you.
