Letting go is hard, isn’t it? Whether it’s control over a situation, fear about the future, or anxiety about what might go wrong, releasing our grip can feel impossible. But trusting God is about more than just saying, “I trust You, Lord,” it’s an intentional process of surrendering our worries and believing He is good, even when things don’t go the way we hoped. Here are five steps to help you let go and trust God fully, no matter what you’re facing.

1. Acknowledge What You’re Holding On To

The first step to letting go is recognizing what you’re clinging to. Are you holding on to control, fear, worry, or the need for a specific outcome? Sometimes we grip things so tightly we don’t even realize it. Take time to reflect and ask God to show you what’s weighing on your heart.

Bringing these things into the light allows you to release them into God’s hands. You can’t surrender what you refuse to acknowledge.

2. Pray Honestly and Surrender Your Worries

God invites you to come as you are. You don’t have to pray perfectly—just be honest about how you feel. Tell God what’s worrying you, what you’re afraid of, and what feels hard to release. Then, give those things to Him in prayer.

Trust isn’t about pretending everything is fine—it’s about choosing to hand over your burdens, even when it’s hard. As you surrender your worries to Him, ask God to give you peace in exchange for your fear.

3. Lean on God’s Promises

It’s hard to trust when fear feels louder than faith. That’s why it’s important to fill your heart with God’s promises. When fear creeps in, remind yourself of His Word:

“Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

God’s promises anchor our hearts, even when circumstances feel uncertain. Keep these truths close and reflect on them when you’re tempted to take control again.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.

4. Take One Day at a Time

Trusting God isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a daily choice. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:34 not to worry about tomorrow because today has enough trouble of its own. Instead of trying to figure out the future, focus on trusting God with today’s challenges.

Letting go means taking one small step of faith at a time. You don’t have to know the whole plan—just follow Him in the present moment.

5. Rest in God’s Faithfulness

Trusting God fully requires remembering His faithfulness. Look back on how He has shown up for you before—times when He answered prayers, provided in unexpected ways, or gave you peace in the storm.

God’s faithfulness in the past is evidence of His faithfulness in the future. Let go of the need to control what comes next and rest in knowing that God is already working on your behalf.

Letting go and trusting God isn’t about having it all together—it’s about learning to lean on Him in every season. It’s okay if it feels hard at times. What matters is that you keep showing up, releasing your worries little by little, and choosing to trust Him along the way.
