Life doesn’t always turn out the way you hoped. Plans collapse. Prayers seem unanswered. Suffering blindsides you. And in the middle of the chaos, you’re left asking the question so many believers have whispered through tears:
“How do I trust God when life doesn’t make sense?”
If you’re here, you’re not alone. The Bible is filled with people who didn’t understand what God was doing, but chose to trust Him anyway. Abraham waiting decades for a promise. Joseph sold by his brothers and unjustly imprisoned. David hunted for years after being anointed king. The disciples grieving as Jesus hung on a cross.
Trusting God isn’t always easy. But it’s the invitation He extends, even in our confusion. Here are three deeply practical, biblical ways to trust God even when everything feels upside down.
1. Remember Who God Is When You Don’t Understand What He’s Doing
When life is painful and confusing, you’ll be tempted to define God by your circumstances. But the Bible calls you to do the opposite: interpret your circumstances in light of God’s unchanging character.
Lamentations 3:22–23
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
God is good even when life is hard. He is faithful even when people betray you. He is sovereign even when you don’t see a way out.
Trust begins with remembering who He is. His character is your anchor in uncertainty.
✅ Reflect:
- Make a list of God’s attributes (faithful, just, merciful, sovereign, loving).
- When doubt rises, speak them out loud.
- Pray: “God, help me see You clearly when everything feels unclear.”
Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.
This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
2. Be Honest With God Instead of Pretending You’re Okay
Trusting God doesn’t mean slapping on a fake smile or hiding your pain. God doesn’t want your performance. He wants your heart—even when it’s breaking.
Psalm 62:8
“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”
You don’t have to have the right words. You don’t need polished prayers. Bring Him your confusion, fear, anger, disappointment. He can handle it.
Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
God draws near to honesty. He’s not offended by your questions. He’s moved by your willingness to come to Him—even with tears.
✅ Practical Step:
- Try journaling a prayer that says exactly what you’re feeling.
- Start with: “God, this doesn’t make sense. Help me trust You here.”
3. Cling to God’s Promises When Your Feelings Falter
Feelings are real—but they’re not always true. When life is confusing, you need something stronger than your emotions to stand on. God’s Word gives you solid ground.
Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
God doesn’t ask you to understand everything. He asks you to trust Him.
Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Romans 8:28
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
His promises don’t always remove the pain. But they give you hope in the middle of it.
✅ Practical Step:
- Pick one promise to memorize this week.
- Speak it over your life daily.
- When fear rises, respond with Scripture.
Why Trusting God Matters When Life Hurts
God never promises us a life without confusion, grief, or pain. What He does promise is Himself.
Psalm 23:4 – “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
You don’t have to like the valley. But you can trust the Shepherd who walks with you through it.
Trust isn’t pretending you’re okay. It’s choosing to lean on the One who is faithful when you’re not. It’s holding onto the promise that He’s working even when you can’t see it.
You’ve got this
If you’re in a season where life feels senseless, please know: God isn’t distant. He sees you. He knows every detail of your confusion. He collects every tear. And He is still good.
2 Corinthians 5:7 – “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
You don’t have to see the whole plan. You just need to know the One writing your story.
