Faith is not just about obeying God in the moment, it is about holding on to His promises even when the fulfillment seems delayed. Hebrews 11 reminds us that many of God’s people lived and died without seeing the promises realized, yet they persevered in faith. True faith is patient, steady, and enduring.

Abraham and Sarah: Trusting the Impossible

“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised” (Hebrews 11:11, ESV). Sarah initially laughed at the promise of a child in her old age (Genesis 18:12), yet she eventually believed, and God fulfilled His word through Isaac.

Abraham, too, persevered. Romans 4:20–21 explains: “No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.” Abraham and Sarah’s story teaches us that persevering faith looks beyond human limitations to the faithfulness of God.

Waiting Without Receiving

“These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar” (Hebrews 11:13). The patriarchs lived with longing, knowing that God’s promises would be fulfilled, even if not in their lifetime. They desired “a better country, that is, a heavenly one” (11:16).

Faith perseveres because it rests not on what is seen, but on what is certain in God’s word. As Paul reminds us: “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Perseverance in Trials

James echoes this truth: “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life” (James 1:12). Perseverance is not passive waiting, it is active endurance, trusting God’s goodness in the midst of delay and difficulty.

Galatians 6:9 encourages us: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Faith perseveres in obedience, confident that God’s promises will come in His perfect time.

Application: Waiting Well

Faith perseveres by waiting with trust, not with grumbling. It holds on to God’s promises with confidence, even when circumstances seem impossible.

  • Where is God calling you to keep trusting Him, even though you have not yet seen the outcome?
  • Do you view delays as denials, or as opportunities to deepen faith?
  • Are you seeking a better country, longing for God’s eternal kingdom above earthly fulfillment?

Faith perseveres because God is faithful. Our hope is not anchored in immediate results but in the eternal promises of God.

Conclusion

Abraham, Sarah, and the patriarchs remind us that faith is not always rewarded in the short term, but it will never be disappointed in the long term. God’s promises are sure, even if their fulfillment is unseen in this life. True faith perseveres, waiting on the God who always keeps His word.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
