Sometimes we come to God and we just don’t have the words. We’re overwhelmed, exhausted, hurting – or just blank. The good news is, He already knows. We don’t have to perform. We just have to come.
Here are 10 simple, honest prayers I’ve prayed when I didn’t know what else to say. Use these as a starting point when you feel stuck, numb, or broken. He hears you.

1. “God, please help.”
When everything feels heavy and you can’t make sense of it, this cry is enough. Psalm 46:1 reminds us He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2. “I don’t understand, but I trust You.”
Even when you don’t feel it, choosing to trust is an act of faith. Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”
3. “I feel alone. Are You here?”
You’re not alone in asking this. David said the same in Psalm 13. And God answers with His presence: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

If your prayer life feels distracted or dry, Fervent by Priscilla Shirer is a must-read. It’s not fluffy—it’s a straight-up battle plan for getting strategic and intentional in prayer. Practical, powerful, and rooted in Scripture. Highly recommend. Grab it here.
4. “I’m angry, and I don’t know what to do with it.”
Bring it to Him. He can handle your anger. Read the Psalms – David often did this. God wants your heart, not your perfection.
5. “Forgive me. I messed up again.”
God doesn’t get tired of your repentance. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.”
6. “Speak. I’m listening.”
Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop talking and listen. Samuel’s response to God in 1 Samuel 3:10 was, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
7. “Give me peace. My thoughts won’t stop.”
When anxiety overwhelms you, Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us that His peace guards our hearts and minds.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.
This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
8. “Show me what to do. I need wisdom.”
James 1:5 promises that when we ask for wisdom, He gives generously without finding fault.
9. “I want to want You again.”
Sometimes our hearts feel cold. Tell Him. Ask Him to stir your affection. Psalm 51:12 says, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation.”
10. “Thank You. Even here, I know You’re good.”
Gratitude is an act of war against discouragement. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.”
If you’re struggling to pray, take heart- you’re not alone. God is near to the brokenhearted. And when you don’t have the words, the Holy Spirit intercedes for you (Romans 8:26).
