If you’ve been fighting porn and lust, you’ve probably tried to white-knuckle your way to freedom. Maybe you made promises to do better. Maybe you set filters and accountability.

But you might be wondering: Why do I keep falling? Why can’t I just stop?

The answer isn’t just in willpower or filters. Those help. But real freedom goes deeper.

It’s about spiritual growth. About letting God transform you from the inside out.

That’s where the Fruit of the Spirit comes in.

Galatians 5: What It Actually Says

Let’s look at the actual text.

Galatians 5:19–23 (ESV):
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

Paul contrasts two realities here:

  • The works of the flesh, which include sexual immorality and lust.
  • The fruit of the Spirit, which includes self-control.

You don’t break free from lust by getting better at being “good.” You break free by walking with the Spirit and letting Him grow new fruit in your life.

Lust Is a Work of the Flesh. Self-Control Is Fruit of the Spirit.

This is huge to understand:

Lust isn’t just a bad habit. It’s a work of the flesh.

Your flesh wants what it wants – no boundaries, no limits, no holiness. Porn addiction thrives in that soil.

But God doesn’t leave you to fight it alone. He gives His Spirit to grow self-control in you.

Romans 8:13 – “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

You can’t kill sin on your own. But the Spirit can.

How Spiritual Growth Helps Break Strongholds

Porn isn’t just about lust. It’s about brokenness, idolatry, escape, and false comfort.

Spiritual growth goes after the roots, not just the fruit.

  • Love fights the selfishness of using others.
  • Joy replaces the empty dopamine hit with real satisfaction in God.
  • Peace calms the anxiety that makes you reach for porn.
  • Patience gives you strength to endure temptation.
  • Kindness and goodness reshape how you see others – not as objects but as people made in God’s image.
  • Faithfulness keeps you walking even when it’s hard.
  • Gentleness softens the harsh self-condemnation.
  • Self-control empowers you to say no.

Spiritual growth isn’t the easy path, but it’s the real path to freedom.

John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Practical Daily Application

This isn’t about trying harder. It’s about training yourself to stay connected to the Spirit daily.

Confess honestly: Don’t hide your struggle. Bring it to God and safe people.
Stay in Scripture: Let His Word reshape your desires.
Pray specifically: Ask the Spirit to grow these fruits in you.
Embrace accountability: Don’t fight alone.
Replace, don’t just remove: Fill your heart with better loves.

Galatians 5:16 – “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Final Encouragement

You can’t produce fruit on your own. But you can choose to walk with the Spirit.

Freedom from porn isn’t about perfection. It’s about dependence. Daily. Honest. Humble.

God is patient with you. He’s for you. And He’s committed to finishing what He started.

Philippians 1:6 – “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
