Armor is usually for defense. It’s meant to protect and keep you from getting hurt, to shield you from blows. But here’s the twist: the final piece of the Armor of God isn’t for defense at all, it’s a sword. This sword isn’t just for show; it’s for attacking. It’s there to cut through and pierce the enemy’s lies so you can not only armor up but fight back when the enemy comes at you. And let me be clear – this is not a game. This is war. We’re in a very real spiritual battle, and there’s a very real enemy trying to take us out.

The Power of the Sword

Welcome back to the Me and Jesus podcast. I’m Karleigh Lynne, and I’m so glad you’re here. If this is your first time hanging out, welcome! My goal on this journey is to share the Word of God in a way that brings it to life, inspiring you to get into the Word yourself. You need to have your own relationship with Scripture. Don’t let anyone spoon-feed you the truth. You can’t truly know if your pastor or your favorite influencer is right unless you dive into the Bible for yourself.

The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, and it equips us not only to stand firm but to actively fight against the lies of the enemy. I believe we as believers sometimes take this incredible gift for granted. We were given a book that holds everything from the beginning to the end, everything we could ever need is right there. Yet so many of us treat the Bible like it’s optional, instead of embracing it as the foundation of our lives.

Why Knowing Your Word Matters

Imagine what would happen if you believed the Word of God as if it were the only truth. Picture how differently you’d show up in your day-to-day life if you truly understood that you were created on purpose for a purpose, before the heavens and the earth even came to be, God decided you needed to be here right now. That realization has the power to change everything.

I’ve been there. I used to hate the Bible because I was taught a version of God that wasn’t the God we serve, a God who was angry and unloving. But when I finally got into the Word for myself, everything changed. I began to see things differently, and the power of Scripture transformed my life. It pulled me out of the darkest places and helped me fight back against crippling anxiety, depression, and the lies that once held me captive.

Jesus Himself used Scripture as His weapon. When He was tempted in the wilderness, He didn’t rely on His own strength, He quoted God’s Word every time. If the Son of God needed Scripture to defeat the enemy, how much more do we?

Putting the Sword to Work

The sword of the Spirit is our greatest offensive weapon in spiritual warfare, but using it effectively takes training. Here are some practical steps to sharpen your sword:

1. Read and Study Daily
Set aside time every day to dive into the Bible. It doesn’t have to be hours, a few minutes here and there will do. The more familiar you are with Scripture, the better equipped you’ll be to recognize and counter spiritual attacks. If you’re not sure where to start, check out a free Bible study I offer that guides you through a simple, effective outline for getting into the Word.

2. Memorize Key Scriptures
When temptation or fear arises, having verses stored in your heart lets you counter lies with truth instantly. Start by memorizing scriptures that speak to your biggest struggles, whether it’s fear, doubt, anxiety, or temptation.

3. Speak the Word Out Loud
There’s power in declaring Scripture over your life. When you’re facing challenges, speak out verses like Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you” or 2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Speaking the Word reinforces the truth and builds your faith.

4. Apply the Word to Your Life
Don’t just read or memorize Scripture; live it out. The Bible isn’t meant to be a collection of words on a page, it’s alive and active, meant to transform your heart and mind. As James 1:22 reminds us, be doers of the word, not hearers only.

Reflection Questions

Spend some time answering these questions in your journal:

  • How often do you turn to Scripture when facing challenges or temptation?
  • Are you actively training with your sword by studying and memorizing God’s Word?
  • What specific lies from the enemy do you need to combat with Scripture?

Write down your thoughts and let God speak to you through His Word.

Stand Up and Fight

The Bible is not just a book of wisdom or encouragement, it is God’s living, powerful Word. It cuts through the lies, builds your faith, and guides you in truth. When you know and wield Scripture, you’re not fighting unarmed. You’re equipped to resist temptation, defeat deception, and stand tall against whatever comes your way.

This week, I challenge you to memorize one new verse. Declare Scripture over your life, apply what you read, and spend time each day sharpening your sword. Dive into the Word, get to know God, and watch how your life transforms as you step into battle fully armed with His truth.

Studying the Word is one thing, learning how to use it is another.

If you want to go deeper and sharpen your sword alongside others, I host a live Bible study every Saturday. We dig into Scripture, ask hard questions, and actually apply what we read.

Come study with us you don’t have to fight alone.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.
