Life has a way of pulling our attention toward what’s missing or what’s not going right. But gratitude shifts our focus, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness and draws us closer to Him. Cultivating gratitude isn’t just about feeling thankful in good seasons; it’s a practice we can develop, even when life feels hard. Here are seven ways to build a heart of gratitude as you walk with Jesus.

1. Start Your Prayers with Thanksgiving
It’s easy to dive into prayer with a list of needs and worries, but starting with gratitude shifts our mindset. Thank God for what He’s already done in your life, even if it feels small. A grateful heart keeps us grounded, reminding us of God’s goodness in every season.
Whether it’s for waking up this morning, a friend’s encouragement, or just God’s presence through the hard stuff, gratitude changes the way we approach Him.
2. Keep a Gratitude Journal
Writing down the things you’re thankful for helps you remember God’s faithfulness, especially on the tough days. Make it a habit to jot down at least one thing each day that you’re grateful for, it doesn’t have to be big. Over time, you’ll begin to notice just how much God is doing, even in the little moments.
When life feels overwhelming, flipping through those pages can remind you of God’s steady hand guiding you through.
3. Thank God in the Hard Seasons
Gratitude isn’t about ignoring the hard stuff; it’s about seeing God’s hand in the midst of it. When you thank Him, even in difficult seasons, you’re declaring that His goodness is greater than your circumstances.
Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “give thanks in all circumstances.” Gratitude in hard seasons strengthens our faith and keeps us rooted in God’s promises.
4. Speak Gratitude Out Loud
There’s something powerful about saying thanks out loud. Whether you’re thanking God during a prayer or expressing gratitude to someone in your life, spoken words have a way of shifting the atmosphere.
Gratitude encourages those around you and draws your heart closer to God. Make it a habit to speak gratitude often, it will change the way you see your day and your relationships.

5. Practice Gratitude for Others
Thank God for the people He’s placed in your life. Pray for them with gratitude, thanking Him for the ways they encourage you, challenge you, or simply walk beside you.
Practicing gratitude for others also looks like expressing your thanks to them directly. A simple word of appreciation can strengthen relationships and reflect the love of Jesus to those around you.
6. Reflect on God’s Faithfulness
Take time to reflect on how God has shown up in your life, answered prayers, unexpected provision, peace in tough times. When we reflect on His faithfulness, it becomes easier to cultivate gratitude, even when we’re still waiting on Him to move.
God’s faithfulness in the past is evidence of His faithfulness in the future. Gratitude grows when we remember that He has never left us, and He never will.
7. Use Worship as an Expression of Gratitude
Worship isn’t just about singing songs, it’s an expression of our hearts. When we worship, we declare who God is and thank Him for all He’s done. Even when life feels heavy, worship helps us shift our focus from the problem to the One who holds it all together.
Turn on your favorite worship music and let it remind you of God’s goodness. As you worship, you’ll find that gratitude begins to rise within you.
Cultivating gratitude in your walk with Jesus takes time, but the more you practice it, the more it becomes a way of life. Gratitude opens our hearts to see God’s hand in every season, reminding us that He is always working, always faithful, and always good.
