One of the questions I get all the time is, “What do I do if I believe God is real, but I don’t know Him personally and I’ve never felt led?” If that’s where you’re at, let me tell you, you’re not alone. And the good news? Building a personal relationship with God is simpler than you might think. It starts with action.

1. Talk to Him Like You’d Talk to a Friend

Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need fancy words or a perfect setting. Just start talking to God.

Tell Him everything: how you’re feeling, your frustrations, your doubts, your hopes. Say, “God, I feel weird even doing this, but I want to know You better.” He’s not looking for polished words, He’s looking for your heart.

There’s a time for structured prayer, but if you’re starting out, just talk to Him throughout your day. Driving to work? Doing the dishes? Sitting in bed? Those are perfect moments to invite God into your life.

2. Spend Time in the Word

If you want to hear God’s voice, start with His Word. The Bible is God’s primary way of speaking to us. Before you open it, pray and ask God to guide you. Say, “Lord, help me hear You through Your Word today.”

You can start anywhere, but the book of John is a great place if you’re new to the Bible. Read a section, reflect on what stands out, and pray about what you’ve read. It doesn’t have to take hours, even 10 minutes a day can make a difference.

3. Be Willing to Listen

Here’s the hard part: after you pray, stop and listen. Too often, we talk to God and then move on with our day, wondering why we don’t hear Him. But God often speaks in the stillness.

Take a moment to sit in silence. Ask Him to clear your mind and open your heart. It might feel awkward at first, but over time, you’ll start recognizing His voice, a gentle nudge, an undeniable urge, or even a sense of peace about a decision.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.

4. Act in Faith

If you feel God leading you to do something, whether it’s starting a conversation, serving someone, or making a change in your life, take that step. Even if you’re unsure, trust that God will guide you as you move forward.

God doesn’t call us to sit still and wait for everything to be perfectly clear. He calls us to act in faith, trusting that He’ll direct our steps.

5. Keep Showing Up

Building a relationship with God takes consistency. You won’t get it perfect, and that’s okay. The important thing is to keep coming back.

When it feels hard, press in. If you feel far from Him, keep praying. When you don’t know what to do, open your Bible and let Him guide you. Relationships take time, and your relationship with God is no different.

You don’t build a relationship with God through perfection. You build it by showing up. Over and over again. Even when you’re tired. Even when it feels like nothing’s changing. God isn’t asking you to perform, He’s inviting you to draw near. It starts with a whisper, a moment, a prayer. And it grows with time, consistency, and His grace holding it all together. If you’re longing to know Him more, you’re already on your way.
