One of the most common questions I get is, “How do you know when God is speaking to you?” It’s a question that so many of us wrestle with, and while the answer might seem complicated, I truly believe it’s simpler than we make it out to be.
The problem is, we often overthink or “religious-ize” the way God communicates with us. We question it, hesitate, and pull a Gideon: “Okay, God, I hear You, but I’m going to put this fleece out again, just to be sure.” Sound familiar?
Let’s unpack this.
God Speaks in Ways You’ll Understand
God speaks to us in ways that we’re most likely to hear. The way He speaks to me might not be the way He speaks to you because He created us as unique individuals. Look at scripture – Jesus spoke differently to the disciples, the Samaritan woman, and the Pharisees. He tailored His communication to each person, meeting them exactly where they were.
For me, God has spoken audibly. Other times, it’s been an undeniable urge that won’t go away. Often, the clearest indicator is this: if you feel a persistent pull to do something you really don’t want to do, and it keeps coming up over and over, that’s likely God speaking to you.
Recognizing God’s Voice
Here’s a key point: conviction is not the same as shame. If you feel a gut-level nudge, a sense of urgency or a pang in your spirit, it’s often God prompting you to act.
But how can you be sure it’s God?
- Align it with Scripture. God will never tell you to do something that contradicts His Word. This is why it’s critical to know your Bible.
- Pray for discernment. Ask God to give you clarity and confirm what you’re hearing.
- Be in consistent prayer and study. A solid relationship with God is the foundation for recognizing His voice.
If you’re not spending time in the Word, you’ll struggle to discern what’s truly from God versus what might be from the enemy or even your own thoughts.
10 Signs God May Be Speaking to You
1. It Aligns with Scripture
God will never contradict His Word. That random “gut feeling” or dream? If it goes against what’s already written in the Bible, it’s not Him.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” – 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)
2. It Produces Peace Even If It’s Hard
Sometimes God asks us to do hard things. But His voice doesn’t stir up chaos or confusion. Even in correction, there’s a steady, grounding peace.
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7 (ESV)
3. It’s Confirmed Through Godly Counsel
God often uses other people to confirm what He’s already saying. That wise mentor, prayer partner, or even your pastor might unknowingly echo the very thing you’ve been wrestling with.
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14 (ESV)
4. It Exposes Your Pride
God’s voice tends to humble us. He often puts His finger on the exact spot where we’ve been trying to stay in control.
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6 (ESV)
5. It Keeps Coming Up
You keep hearing the same verse. The same message in a sermon. The same theme in a conversation. That’s not a coincidence.
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way.” – Psalm 37:23 (ESV)
6. It Challenges Your Comfort
God loves you, but He’s not trying to keep you comfy. He’s about growth, maturity, obedience.
“And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” – Matthew 10:38 (ESV)
7. It Leads You to Repentance
God’s voice doesn’t flatter. It transforms. If what you’re sensing calls you to turn from sin and walk closer with Him, lean in.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27 (ESV)
8. It Echoes Scripture You Didn’t Even Know You Knew
Ever had a verse pop into your mind out of nowhere? That’s the Holy Spirit.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” – John 14:26 (ESV)
9. It Doesn’t Stroke Your Ego
God doesn’t exist to validate your every move. When He speaks, it’s usually less about what you want and more about what He wants to do in you.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” – Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)
10. It Draws You Closer to Jesus
If it’s truly God, it’ll always pull you toward Him, not away.
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” – John 15:4 (ESV)
The Importance of Action
God is a God of action. In the Bible, miracles didn’t happen until people moved:
- Ruth found Boaz after she went into the field.
- The walls of Jericho fell after the Israelites marched around them.
- The Red Sea parted after Moses obeyed God’s command.
We often sit around waiting for God to work, but He’s already given us the tools we just need to take the first step. Trust that He’ll redirect you if needed, but you have to start moving.

The Spiritual Battle Is Real
Hearing from God isn’t always easy because the enemy actively works to distract and discourage us. Every time you sit down to pray or open your Bible and something interrupts you, that’s not coincidence, it’s spiritual warfare.
Stay persistent. Be disciplined. And most importantly, keep your focus on Jesus.
