In a world that constantly pulls us in different directions, it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. We’re bombarded with messages that tell us success, wealth, and material things are the ultimate goals. But deep down, we know there’s something more, something that truly fulfills. That’s where Jesus steps in with His teachings in Matthew 6:19-24, offering us a way to refocus our lives on what’s eternal and truly satisfying.

Understanding Matthew 6:19-24 (ESV)

Here’s what Jesus says in this passage:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (ESV)

These words hit home, don’t they? They challenge us to think about what we’re really investing in, both in our hearts and in our lives.

Where’s Your Treasure?

Jesus is calling us to think about what we’re really chasing after. In today’s world, this might look like choosing to invest less in things that won’t last, like material stuff or chasing trends and more in what helps us grow in our faith and relationships.

So, what are we spending our time on? Are we focused on drawing closer to Jesus, or are we caught up in things that won’t really satisfy?

The Lamp of the Body: What Are You Focused On?

When Jesus talks about the eye being the lamp of the body, He’s getting at what we’re letting into our lives. In a world where distractions are everywhere, it’s crucial to keep our focus on what brings Jesus’s light into our lives.

What are you focusing on each day? Is it filling you with Jesus’s light, or is it leading you away from Him?

You Can’t Serve Two Masters

This is probably the toughest part. We live in a culture that often tells us that money and success are everything. But Jesus makes it clear – you can’t serve both God and money. It’s not that having money is wrong, but when it starts to control us, we lose sight of who’s really in charge.

Who’s the master of your life? Where’s your loyalty?

Putting Jesus’s Teachings Into Action

So, how do we live this out in our daily lives? Here are some practical steps:

  • Check Your Priorities: Take a moment to think about where your time, energy, and money are going. Are they helping you grow in your faith and serve others, or are they tied up in things that don’t really matter?
  • Focus on the Good Stuff: Be intentional about what you’re watching, listening to, and thinking about. Make sure it’s filling you with Jesus’s light and helping you stay on track.
  • Choose Jesus Every Day: Each day, make a conscious choice to put Jesus first. Trust that when you do, He’ll take care of everything else in ways that go beyond what money or success could ever offer.
