Today, my focus was on Matthew 8:1-4, where Jesus cleanses a leper. This passage, rich with cultural and historical context, offers profound insights into faith, healing, and the breaking of societal norms.
A Leap of Faith: The Leper’s Bold Move
Matthew 8:1-4 describes Jesus descending from the mountain after delivering the Sermon on the Mount, followed by a great crowd. Amidst this multitude, a leper approaches Jesus, a significant act of faith considering the societal and religious implications of leprosy at the time.
Leprosy, in biblical times, was not only a physical ailment but also carried a heavy social and religious stigma. Lepers were considered unclean and were required to live in isolation, as outlined in Leviticus 13:45-46. They had to wear torn clothes, let their hair hang loose, cover their upper lip, and cry out, “Unclean, unclean!” to keep people away. This isolation was both a health precaution and a societal judgment, as leprosy was often seen as a divine curse.
Yet, in this narrative, the leper disregards these norms. Seeing Jesus, he boldly steps forward and kneels before Him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” This statement is powerful. The leper doesn’t demand healing; he humbly submits to Jesus’ will, expressing unwavering faith in His power to heal.
The Compassionate Touch of Jesus
What happens next is truly remarkable. Jesus, fully aware of the social and religious implications, stretches out His hand and touches the leper, saying, “I will; be clean.” This act of touching the leper was revolutionary. According to the law, anyone who touched a leper would become ceremonially unclean. However, instead of Jesus becoming unclean, His touch brings healing and restoration to the leper.
This touch symbolizes Jesus’ willingness to break social and religious barriers to demonstrate God’s love and power. It challenges us to reflect on areas in our lives where we might be avoiding “unclean” situations or people, and consider how we can extend Christ’s love beyond societal norms.
The Call for Obedience and Humility
After healing the leper, Jesus instructs him to tell no one but to go and show himself to the priest and offer the gift commanded by Moses as a testimony. This instruction emphasizes the importance of humility and obedience. The leper’s testimony was meant to be a private confirmation of his healing to the religious authorities, not a public spectacle.
However, as recorded in Mark 1:45, the leper couldn’t contain his excitement and began to talk freely about his healing, making it difficult for Jesus to enter towns openly. This disobedience, though understandable in his joy, had consequences for Jesus’ ministry.
Lessons Learned
This passage offers several profound lessons:
- Prioritize Time with God: Despite our busy lives, spending time with God should always come first. When we prioritize Him, He speaks to us and guides us in ways we cannot imagine.
- Act in Faith: The leper’s bold approach to Jesus, despite societal norms, demonstrates the power of faith. Trust in Jesus’ ability to heal and transform, even when circumstances seem insurmountable.
- Break Barriers: Jesus’ touch of the leper teaches us to reach out with compassion, breaking through societal and religious barriers to extend God’s love to those deemed “unclean” or outcast.
- Embrace Humility and Obedience: Following Jesus’ instructions, even when it’s difficult, is crucial. Obedience and humility are essential in our walk with God.
- Trust in God’s Will: Approach God with a heart that says, “If you will,” trusting in His perfect plan, whether or not it aligns with our immediate desires.
This morning’s Jesus time reminded me of the importance of faith, obedience, and breaking barriers. God is always ready to meet us, heal us, and guide us, even when we approach Him reluctantly. His goodness and faithfulness are unwavering, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
If you’re ready to come to Jesus like the leper did, honest, unsure, but full of faith, I’ve got something for you.
