I used to roll my eyes at Proverbs 31. For years it felt like the church held it over women like a measuring stick. I avoided anything with “Proverbs 31” in the title because I thought it demanded perfection I could never reach.

Then I finally read the passage for myself. Without the baggage. And it was nothing like I had been told.

One verse stopped me in my tracks:

Proverbs 31:17 (ESV)
“She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.”

That line gripped my heart. Not in a shame-based way. It felt like the Spirit’s loving conviction about my health, my energy, and my capacity to serve. I want to share how God has been reshaping my view of strength, body stewardship, and what this verse invites us into.

Conviction, Not Condemnation

Conviction is the Spirit’s kindness that calls us back to wisdom. Condemnation is the enemy’s shame that pushes us into hiding. When the Lord highlighted Proverbs 31:17, it was conviction. Not pressure to chase aesthetics. A call to increase capacity so I can do what God has asked me to do.

If you feel that nudge too, breathe. This is not about becoming someone else. It is about becoming faithful with what God has given you.

What “Strength” Means Here

The Hebrew word often translated “strength” in this passage is about might, capability, and readiness. It is practical. The Proverbs 31 woman runs a household, manages business, cares for people, and moves through her day with wisdom and purpose. She needs strength for her assignment.

This is not vanity. This is preparedness.

A Biblical Lens for the Body

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (ESV)
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

1 Timothy 4:8 (ESV)
“For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

Colossians 3:23–24 (ESV)
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.”

Scripture does not worship the body and it does not ignore it. Bodily training has value. Stewardship is worship. Strength is a tool for obedience.

Conviction Versus Cultural Pressure

  • Conviction says: Care for the body God gave you so you can serve Him with stamina.
  • Pressure says: Be smaller, prettier, more acceptable.

One draws you closer to Jesus. The other fuels comparison, obsession, and shame. We reject pressure. We receive conviction.

My Story, Briefly

I have wrestled with weight, chronic illness, and disordered patterns. As a teen, discovering women’s strength sports helped interrupt a destructive path because building muscle required nourishment. Over the years I have started and stopped, made progress and self-sabotaged, and God keeps inviting me back. Not to chase an image. To build capacity, to mother well, to serve well, to endure trials with strength.

The ESV Study Bible is hands down my favorite. It’s packed with context, maps, commentary, and notes that help make Scripture clearer without watering it down.

This is the exact one I use!
It’s deep, solid, and totally worth it.

Start Where You Are: Strength For Your Season

You do not need a perfect plan. You need a faithful first step.

  • Walk daily. Ten to thirty minutes. Consistency beats intensity.
  • Learn two to four basic lifts. Squat, hinge, push, pull. Progressive overload over time builds bones, muscle, and confidence.
  • Hydrate and eat enough protein. Small, repeatable habits matter.
  • Sleep like it’s ministry. Restoration fuels obedience.
  • Ask better questions:
    • Does this habit increase my capacity to serve, to parent, to glorify God?
    • Does this choice bring me closer to God or farther away?

Guardrails That Keep This Healthy

  • Identity first. You are in Christ before you are in any size.
  • Order your loves. Fitness is of some value. Godliness is of value in every way.
  • Watch for idols. If the mirror has more authority than the Word, pause and reset.
  • Community helps. Walk with a friend. Ask for prayer. Celebrate faithfulness, not perfection.

Reframing Proverbs 31

The Proverbs 31 woman is not an impossible standard. She is an example of faithfulness and action. Her strong arms are not for impressing people. They are for serving her household and fulfilling her calling.

Strength is not merely physical. It is spiritual stewardship. If God is convicting you in this area, lean in. It is not condemnation. It is an invitation to live with strength for the work He has placed in your hands.

A Simple Prayer

Father, thank You for my body and the calling You have given me. Teach me to steward my strength for Your glory. Show me the next small step that will increase my capacity to love and serve well. Keep my heart free from shame and comparison. Make me strong in body and steadfast in spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
