Building your house on the rock and what that truly means is a conversation that doesn’t get enough airtime these days. Remember that classic song about the wise man who built his house upon the rock? I’m sure you know it: “The rains came down, and the floods came up….” Yes, that one! So catchy and memorable, yet the real meaning behind it is something we need to dive deeper into.

Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV):

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

This passage is not just a metaphor; it’s a wake-up call! It’s about building a solid foundation in our lives, anchored in Jesus. What does it mean to build our house on the rock? The straightforward answer is Jesus. But what does that really entail?

Building requires digging

Building a house on the rock involves digging deep to find the bedrock, just as a wise builder would. In the hot summer months, sand can appear stable, but as we know, it shifts and moves. If you don’t establish a firm foundation, when the storms of life hit, your house is going to come tumbling down.

When you build your life on Jesus, you’re not just acknowledging Him as your foundation; you’re living like it’s true. You have to act on that belief! Does that mean you’ll be perfect? Absolutely not. Priscilla Shire puts it perfectly: “It does not mean living a perfect life.” Instead, it means you stop scheduling sin in your life. We’re all human; we slip up. But if you’re making space for things that don’t align with your values and calling, you’re building on shaky ground.

Context

At the time when Jesus shared this parable, the Pharisees were all about that surface-level righteousness, following laws and rules instead of the heart of God. They created personal convictions and turned them into laws, which is not the way to go.

Let’s get real.

For me, it was listening to secular music. I love some classic emo bands, but I had to recognize that certain songs were affecting my heart and mind in a way that wasn’t healthy. While I can make a case for why we shouldn’t listen to certain music, my convictions don’t apply to everyone. That’s the key! Building your house on the rock doesn’t mean piling on laws; it’s about trusting God to guide you.

In my work as a business and marketing coach, I see so many people paralyzed by fear of getting it wrong. But guess what? Taking action is crucial! You have to trust that God will course-correct you if you stray. Just like laying a foundation for a house or a business, you’ve got to put in the work.

Follow Jesus

One of my favorite songs is “Walk with Jesus” by Consumed by Fire. The lyrics resonate: “You can choose whatever road you choose, but I’m going to love the way He says to love, and I’m going to trust the way He says to trust.” That’s what it’s all about, walking alongside Jesus and letting Him lead the way.

But here’s the kicker: building your house on the rock isn’t just about listening to podcasts or reading blog posts (even this one!). You’ve got to dive into the Word yourself. If you’re not familiar with Scripture, how will you know if what you hear aligns with God’s truth? It’s vital to spend time in the Bible, getting to know the God you serve.

God Doesn’t Contradict Himself

God will never contradict His Word. When you have that foundation, you’ll be equipped to recognize the lies the enemy tries to sneak into your mind. You don’t need to memorize every verse, but spending quality time in the Word every day is non-negotiable. If you’re unsure where to start, check out my free six-day Bible study here. If you’re building your house on the rock, remember: open your Word! It’s more fascinating and powerful than you’ve ever been taught. If you’re new to Scripture or feeling lost, I highly recommend starting with Ephesians and then diving into the book of John. Those texts will reveal just how deeply God loves us and how incredibly worthy we are in His eyes.

Prayer

This message is so important, and we need to keep having conversations like this. If you’re able, I invite you to close your eyes and join me in prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you right now, and I just want to say thank you so much, Lord, for everything that you are using me for. Thank you that I get to do this. It is not something that I take for granted at all. Thank you, Lord, for every single listener.

Lord, reach out.

God, I pray that you just stretch your hand out over every single person reading this right now, and I pray that you just impact their life and that you show them where their foundation is cracked. I pray that you show them that they might need to actually start over and build a brand new home.

Show them.

Show them where they need to repair some things. Show them where things are not quite where they need to be, Lord. I pray that you would just show up in a really big way for them, and that you would help them to build that foundation on the rock and on you, God.

Thank You.

Thank you so much for your word, and thank you for everything that you’ve shown us in it. Thank you that there is so much in here, that there’s something for everything in our lives, God, and that we are not alone. I thank you and I praise you for all you’ve done, all you’re doing, and all you will do.

In Jesus’ wonderful name we pray. Amen.
